THE WELL

He would see her

Every morning

On his way to the well

Every morning

They would pass

Sometimes

She would smile

Her smile he thought

Was like the light of morning

With dust

Rising from their sandals

Every morning

They would pass

Flowers

By the roadside

Wild flowers

Along the path to the well

Of every color

Reaching

For the light of morning

Lilies

In the pond

Wild and free

Bathing

And reaching for the light

Of the sun

Slowing

By the roadside

Flowers of every color

Collected, then later

Bathing in the pond

Sitting

Among the boulders

Working

By moonlight

Flowers of every color

Lilies

Wild and free

Woven together

With dust

Rising from his sandals

Slowing by the roadside

A bracelet

Gently placed along the path

Winding to the well

A bracelet

Gone

In the light of morning

Flowers of every color

A necklace of lilies…wild and free…gently placed

Then gone

From the path to the well

He would see her

Every morning

On his way to the well

With heads down

And eyes lowered

They would quietly pass

With head down

And eyes lowered

He would pass

Suddenly sandals…. and bare brown legs

Blocking his way

Slowly he raised his eyes

Flowers of every color

Around her wrist

Lilies…wild and free

Throughout her hair

Falling

Down and around

Her shoulders and neck

Dust drifted through time

With sunlight, silence and blue sky
Pressing in around them

Her smile he thought

Is like the light of sun
