LATE SUMMER

He has always loved her

Both before and after

Now

Why

He really does not know

The way she showed her eyes

Certainly has held some sway

He had never seen eyes

Shown quite that way

And beauty

Being beautiful

These are just words

He turned these words over and around earlier

And looked at them in the clear light of morning

While watching a vibrant green leaf

Being buffeted by the early morning breeze of late summer

The fragile fleetingness of it all

Really can bring tears to the eyes

He wishes this reality

Was borne by all

Everywhere

Always

The realization would dawn

That so much we deem important

Does not matter

A slow kiss

A light slow kiss

A light slow gentle kiss

Better yet

Several light slow gentle kisses

In the early morning sun

Of morning

Like now

Now

THIS MATTERS!

Very much

He glanced down into his shirt

The sleeves had been tied together to form a bag

It was filled with color

The color rose out of the top

Along with an intoxicating aroma

WHERE DID HE GET THOSE?

He glanced over to where she sat

Watching him

Motionless, erect, hands in her lap

Light surrounded her

He picked up the shirt and moved to her

Swinging one leg over her legs

He sat on her knees facing her

And dumped the contents of the shirt into her lap

She did not move

Nor did she speak

They both simply sat silent and still

Surrounded by the intoxicating aroma and color

Feeling their hearts being buffeted

By the early morning breeze of late summer

He has always loved her

Why

He really does not know
