THE GENTLE NIGHT

Moonlight shines through the clouded glass

The windowpanes outlined in shadow and light

My finger gently follows the shadows

Tracing the soft charcoal squares on lily white

Living breathing flesh

Warm darkness hugs us both

On a sea of flannel and down

The only sounds are waves gently breaking on the bow

We are both half conscious

We are both half asleep

Watching the shadows of clouds drift by

From the same place

Apart

But, together

I am grateful for her warmth

Grateful for her loving touch

Recognizing the gift of silence

Recognizing the gift of time

Recognizing the gift

Of fleeing fleeting shared existence

And, as we lay together

As we lay apart

Never

Are there spoken words

By choice

We live, love and dwell

In the living breathing silence
